The other gauges are available with guitar ball ends but the thickest single available right now is an .80.

Especially with a lot more 8-string guitars being made now I'm sure I wouldn't be alone in appreciating the option. It can be important to dial in the right tension for that low string.

Flatwound strings for a electroacoustic bass?

Hi everybody!

First, let me apologize for my poor english. I am from Barcelona (Spain) and this is not my mother tongue.

I have recently bought a Fender electroacoustic bass, the Kingman SCE.

In their webpage, Fendes states that the strings that comes with it are the D'Addario® EXP™ PBB170, (.045-.100 Calibres).

I've been checking your offer of strings for electroacoustic bass guitars and the only choice is Phosphor/Bronze.

Since I love the touch (and tone, cleanliness, long life, ...) of flatwound steel strings, I always use this kind in my electric (fretted) bass. And I wonder if I could do the same with my brand new electroacoustic bass, replacing their original strings for a new set of flatwounds.

But I am hesitating, since I really do not know if, maybe, the increased tension could damage the top (or the bridge) in the instrument.

So, my question would be: May I put flats (safely) in my acoustic bass or should I resign myself to use only Phosphor/bronze strings?

Thank you in advance for your answers.

Greetings.

Original Strings for Takamine G Series EG340SC Acoustic Electric Guitar???

2 weeks ago I received a new Takamine G Series EG340SC Acoustic Electric Guitar. I have been having a difficult time with it. First, the tuner did not work so I asked KMC to send me another. Now, when I loosened the 'G' string, #3, it just broke on me. All I did was loosen it, I swear. In order to install a new TP4T tuner/preamp, you must plug 2 connectors in from the inside of the guitar. This requires that you loosen all the strings.

NO documentation came with the EG340SC, nothing. All I got was a registration card and a little tag which says D'Addario EXP, Extended Play Strings, came installed with the guitar (which is funny because I never actually got to PLAY the strings at all).

Posting questions on a forum is always a last resort for me because it takes so long. I did several searches but I could find NOTHING about which D'Addario EXP strings originally come with the Takamine EG340SC and I counted 15 different kinds.
6 Here:
Fretted Strings > Acoustic Strings > EXP Coated 80/20 Bronze Wound

...and 9 Here:
Fretted Strings > Acoustic Strings > EXP Coated Phosphor Bronze Wound

Could someone please tell me WHICH D'Addario EXP strings come originally with the Takamine EG340SC? All I need is the model number, EXP??. That is, the letter "EXP" followed by 2 numbers. If I were to venture a wild guess, it would be "EXP12". However, I have no way of knowing for sure.

Thanks in advance.

P.S.: And will someone please tell Takamine to include full documentation with their guitars???!!!
acoustic strings breaking often

I've been breaking strings more often than usual...probably because I've been playing in a lot of different alternate tunings (mostly DADF#AD and DADEAD and back to standard very often).

Is there anyway to increase the strings' longevity, especially against all the stress I'm placing on them? I am trying to determine the proper string gauges for my Gibson LP.

Tuning is: B F# B E G# B

On my Epiphone, I just used 12-52's with no regard for tension/tension distribution. But now I would like to be more informed and precise with my new guitar setup. I know that the tension will be lower on my Hi & Low B strings, and am looking to make a measured compensation for each.

I am trying to use the D'Addario formula for calculating string tensions, but I can not figure out how to find the string frequency for my tuning. The D'Addario charts only have frequencies listed for standard tuning. Can you suggest anything for me?

Thanks for your help.

D'Addario EPN120 Pure Nickel Wrap

Does anyone know if the core is round or hex?

HELP NEED EXACT Guitar Strings for my ibanez rgr465m (cherry apple)

Please tell me what d'addario strings should i use. i have replaced it with extra light and it sounds awful than the original

New String Set Suggestions for D'Addario

I know single strings can be bought to customize sets, but I think it would be cool if D'Addario added this new line of strings:

10 - 52, wound 3rd (20w)

11 - 54, wound 3rd (22w)

12 - 56, wound 3rd (24w)

This would be aimed at rhythm players, especially in the rock/metal field, who want clear and precise chords that only a wound 3rd can give. I am totally buzzed with how great they sound. I don't do my own work on that guitar, I haven't quite gotten the wrap technique down yet to make them stay taunt. But, I just wanted to pay tribute to the wonderful quality of these strings. That may sound trite in this world of stellar perfectionists, the music world, but, just the fact that they are "Made in America" needs to be celebrated. I also took time to view the "How it's made" video in the home site. I learned something there. So, Thanks to D'addario for continuing to be faithful to America and injecting true economic stimulus into "our" economy instead of the Chinese economy. On a philosophical note, many of us here in this country realize the true importance of the arts to a culture. I have been playing music most all my life, and I am 56 now. I shutter to think what our lives would be like without the diversion of music. I do question the direction the music community takes sometimes but, we must still maintain our acceptance and appreciation of those dedicated and fearless people that carry on the legacy of great muscianship. I'm a long time D'Addario user, and had been mildly frustrated for a the few years that I started occasionally playing pure nickel strings that D'Addario didn't offer a set, forcing me to commit adultery on occasion :hehe:

I had just put a fresh set of standard XL115s on my Strat when the handful of EPN sets I had ordered arrived, and decided I didn't want to clip them off, so I figured it would be a couple of weeks or so before I could try them. Then I had a lightbulb moment.

I have a Fender Tele Plus with first-generation Lace Sensor pickups (if you're familiar with the type of Telecaster Johnny Greenwood from Radiohead plays, it's that same model). For those unfamiliar with Lace Sensors they come in several different varieties, each mimicking a particular style of pickup...a vintage humbucker, a vintage single coil, a modern hi output pickup, blah blah blah. They are extremely quite and have little to no magnetic pull. They are also, in my experience, react quite sensitively to the strings that are on the guitar. You can almost tell how old the strings are just by listening to it through an amp.

This guitar also has a lot of output and often overdrives the front of smaller wattage amps almost too easily. A set of ProSteels would probably render clean tones on this guitar nearly impossible :D I had an idea that perhaps replacing the XL115s I've used on it for...geez...15 years now?...might help tame this beast a bit. So I put a set of EPN115s on.

This set has really added some nice, vintage-y flavor to a very modern setup. The splittable Red Lace Sensor "humbucker" (really two individual Lace Sensors arranged in a humbucker configuration that can be paired or used individually) at the bridge position has gone from very brassy, aggressive and somewhat thin to taking on a rich, beefy Tele twang in the "3" position (LS closest to the bridge), a honky, wooly, somewhat vocal tone with both LSs selected (not much change here, actually) to a KILLER, barky, dynamic P90 sort of flavor in the "1" position (LS furthest from the bridge).

The middle position, typically very snappy, has retained that snap but now there's a nice midrangey roundness behind it. While standard XLs made it very shimmery and glassy (that's a good thing), the EPNs give it a round, woodier tone that loves a bit of grit behind it.

The neck position didn't change too drastically...it's a Blue LS meant to channel a big PAF humbucker type-of-sound. Still, big, rich and jazzy as before.

The output has been tamed nicely. I can now kick up the gain a bit but still stay clean when I want to. The tonal changes are not night and day; this is still the same guitar it was before the EPNs. But the subtleties that have been brought out are fantastic.

Anyways, if you've made it this far...congratulations! I'm not ditching normal XLs by a longshot, but I love how these new EPNs are performing so far, and can't wait to try them out on my other guitars. I think they're definitely worth trying on nearly any other guitar out there.

That little spring under the tremolo arm on your Strat..

I've never really got to grips with using the tremolo on my Strat Plus... it always seemed a little loose and it was a pain removing it each time to put the guitar away in its case.

But I happened to browse the Start Plus user manual online and found two things:
1) You don't have to remove the trem arm in the case! Now, this may seem obvious to others, but I bought my Strat used with the arm removed and assumed that it wouldn't fit in the case with arm fitted, so religiously removed it each time.
2) There is a little spring that fits in the trem arm mounting hole. I bought one of eBay and it makes a fantastic difference - firms up the arm and lets it stay where you put it... neither too floppy or too stiff.

It's only a little thing (literally!), but if you've got a missing trem arm spring I would recommend you get one - it makes a really big difference. Not sure if other guitars have the same thing or if it's only certain Strats.

New EXP Coated Acoustic Strings

At D'Addario we have just released our new EXP Coated Strings.

They boast a 50% thinner coating that delivers at least 4 times more string life and unparalled uncoated string tone. With that, in addition to our compound-plated plain steel strings, which deliver 4X more corrision reisistant tin, we have produced the ultimate coated string. Hopefully, you've had a chance to try them. Look for the "New" artwork on the front of the package. We look forward to your comments. Do you just buy a regular 12-string set and throw away the spares?! Just curious to know what they fit in the factory.

There's a BC Rich on eBay at the moment... It's probably a pretty poor quality guitar as far as they go, but I don't know a whole lot about that - it's a Carlos. At any rate, some things are a little foggy:
1. My finger tips are hurting way more than I ever remember them hurting when I started playing back in the day. Is there any kind of quick fix for this, like using a particular guage string? I think I've got light guage strings on now.

2. If my hands are clean when I begin playing and I play for an hour per day, roughly how long can I expect my strings to last?

3. When I put new strings on, they seem to have a really difficult time staying in tune. I seem to remember stretching them while stringing the guitar but I can't really remember the specifics. Should I be doing something something special other than just putting those suckers on and tuning them up?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Planet Waves classic celluiod guitar picks

I would like to buy 1200 classic celluloid Planet Waves picks. I just put on a fresh set of XL 115W's. They been on for three weeks and they are starting to show signs of wear. In both cases, when I restring, I have a hard time getting that first wrap around the tuning peg to not bend at an angle. At Taylor they have a detailed step by step instruction about restringing, and in the illustrations the strings seem to curve effortlessly around the peg, wrapping perfectly against it. Instead, I get sort of a 45 degree first angled wrap, then have trouble getting the strings to sort of line up in neat rows in their successive wraps.

Maybe it just takes practice, but any tips would be appreciated. :)

The Shelf Life of String Packs

Hi! New member here.:)

Lately I've been buying up 5-packs and 10-packs of D'Addario EXL120s. Not only am I getting excellent deals by buying the strings from the U.S. (compared to prices here in Australia), the multi string packs at the moment have great bonuses like the Chordmaster and the S.O.S. mini tuner.

At last count I had 32 sets of 120s and 5 sets of 125s. The strings come in corrosion resistant sealed packs although I'm guessing that some slight rusting still occurs.

Am I being realistic to expect the strings to be like new when unwrapped in 3 or 4 years time?

Slightly off-topic: The 120s and 125s are close in gauge (9 to 42 vs 9 to 46). Would anyone recommend a truss rod adjustment when changing between the two sets?

Flat Wound vs Ribbon Wound

I've heard that flat wound strings are different from Ribbon wound.
