| | I;m having problems with a one-off short scale bass I built from a Telecaster guitar....very low output from the G string, and it was suggested to me that it might be as simple as a dead string. Problem is, these were very expensive to buy and an off brand string set designed for a Nomad Traveller travel bass. The brand was PIE ZO-3, and the gauges were .125-.105-.085-.065. A veteran in the forum I usually hang out in has suggested I can probably get away with cutting down a long scale string to replace it, but I'm curious....Looking at strings on eBay, it looks as if these strings I've got are mammoth compared to what most manufacturers call "heavy gauge". Comments? Also, any idea whether I've got to buy a whole set to get a .065, or are bass strings sold individually, and if so by who? |

| | I'd bought a couple of clones, a Showmaster and a Telecaster, for cheap on eBay, and was having trouble figuring out what to do with them. The Telecaster was a POS as a guitar and had one of these fence post necks that I don't like. I shaved the neck down to a raesonable profile, plugged the guitar tuner holes, reveneered the front and back of the headstock, and redrilled for four bass tuners. Biggest problem I hadn't anticipated was how oversize the bass hardware would be on a guitar. I'd bought a full set of Fender JazzBass hardware, and the problems started when I realized there wasn't physically enough room for four Jazz tuners on the headstock....Switched pver to more compact Gotoh's. Then the string spacing issue raised its ugly head....Changed the Precision and JazzBass pickups for two violin bass humbuckers and a Strat rail. Then the Jazz bridge was too wide, so I used a Schaller with adjustable spacing. And the Precision nut that I intaebded to use wouldn't work, so I bought a Tusq Jazz nut. Added a five way switch, bridge + neck parallel toggle, and a TBX, and jazzBass bridge cover and thumbrest. It looks pretty (cherryburst with maple neck) and plays not bad, with action a bit on the high side due to low string tension. Why did I do it? ...Because somebody said it couldn't be done. They were wrong - It could be done, but probably shouldn't have. Anyway, I'm happy....Just wish I could solve the dead "G" string issue. |

| | I don't buy the "dead string" arguement, but followed the thread and think .065 is still mighty big for the G on a baby bass guitar like your telefrankenstein bass. Most of the time I see and play G's that are .045. I was talking with "Binky", bass technician for The Who during the SuperBowl, while checking out Pino Palladino's set-up. I specifically asked about the light guage strings I saw on his Fender P bass for that show. "Maybe as small as .035", he said of the G. The bass also had the pickups from a Gibson Thunderbird. The pickup was to get a tone more like Entwistle's, while the lighter strings made it easier to play. You can very likely buy the single string of choice on this website. Good luck!
